I signed up for another CS class on Udacity.com. This one is supposed to be about building a search engine. I’m having a very difficult time with this class. While the lectures make sense, and I’m able to answer all the quizzes through out the lectures, I can’t seem to figure out how to solve the homework. To me, it feels like the homework questions do not relate to the content of the lectures at all. I’m sure there is a connection of some sort, but I just can’t figure it out. Unfortunately, it’s making me want to drop the class.

A friend is also taking the class. He is a much more advanced developer than I am, and has much more experience with programming languages than I do. He’s been generous with offering to help. The problem is I don’t know what questions to ask, or what is not clicking for me.

I’m questioning the amount of time I’m spending trying to answer the homework assignments. Today I spent close to 5+ hours and made absolutely no progress. Seems like a waste. 5 hours later and all I’m left with is a massive headache from grinding my teeth.

In two weeks, I run the Brooklyn Half-Marathon and this was a scheduled training run. I don’t think I could have run another step. I really had to push myself through the last 2 miles. I don’t really have anything to say other than I finished, and now I don’t have to run that far for another two weeks. Yay!

This morning was Run for the Parks, a 4-mile scored race and qualifier #4. 4 down, 5 more to go. We’ve been having a nice stretch of weather, though a bit dry, in NYC. Things changed today, it was cold, damp and windy. Thankfully the rain didn’t start until I was well on my way home.

It was a good run! Despite almost losing all forward propelling motivation after the volunteer at mile 2 yelled “Half-way done!” I finished with a personal best, 7:15 pace. Looking back over my running notes, it looks like that’s a personal best for a mile over the entire time I’ve been running! Very happy!

Well, I opted to run a different race, closer to my apartment, despite it not being a marathon qualifier. But as it turns out, the weather is supposed to be horrible Sunday. I don’t mind if it rains a little, but I’m hoping it’s not a complete washout.

Side note, picked up my race number, I’m still in the yellow corral. I’m supposed to be red. Not a huge deal, but starting closer to the front of the pack makes a huge difference in final race times.

I took this week off of work. My intention was to relax, regroup and take care of little things that have been piling up. For the most part, the week has been successful. I’ve dropped off dry cleaning, did a sh#t load of laundry, cashed in all my loose change, worked on some pro-bono websites that have been neglected and managed to (mostly) stay away from sugar and tv.

Unfortunately, I still have the feeling of being on high-alert. Almost as if I’m forgetting something really important. Or that by getting the little things done, I’m creating a bigger mess of everything else. This is not very rational, but it’s a characteristic I’d like to defeat. I need to relax. Here’s what I’m doing to start doing:

1) get to bed an hour earlier
2) get up early enough to mediate
3) stay away from sugar
4) drink less wine

Let’s see how it goes.

I know it looks gross, but I started making my own kombucha at home. It’s amazing to me how expensive it is to buy in the stores, when in reality, it is just fermented tea. I had a similar thought when I was craving kimchi and the health food store was selling a small jar for $15. I found the same jar in an Asian market a couple blocks away for $4. No wonder everyone eats like crap with all the mass-market corner stores and “fast-food” places every few steps. Fortunately, I had everything I needed to make this healthy brew right in my cupboard.

I’m in one of those ruts where I have so many different projects coming my way, that I don’t really known what to focus on and how to get started. I read a lot of self help books on how to deal with anxiety and taking things one step at a time, and the advice applies to work as well. While I’m not exactly anxious about the work, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed.

One of the things I decided to do to help clear my head and regain focus, is to take a portion of every Friday morning and work on non-project/deadline related things. these tend to be things that I have on my todo list that are important, but really only to me. I haven’t been doing this for long, and am working on getting over the “guilty” feeling for not focusing on the deadlines looming, but I’m getting there, and feel better at the end of the day for making the effort.

While the syntax of Python is easy enough to learn, where I’m struggling is with the math and logic. I guess when it comes to programming, that’s a pretty big issue to overcome. It’s helpful to be taking the class with colleagues, but at the same time, you don’t want to be the weak link.
